Graduated with a doctorate from the State University of Albany in New York, where she worked for over twenty-five years in community mental health clinics, as an agency administrator, university faculty and supervisor, and in private practice. She did consulting work for the Catholic Diocese doing individual, couple and group therapies, and evaluating candidates to the priesthood. She also was involved in adoption work, completing home studies for potential adoptive families, and post placement reports for the various counties in and around Albany.
Prior to living and working in New York, Dr. Keenan gained extensive experience working in hospitals in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As part of a multidisciplinary team she was involved in patient discharge planning, Emergency Room assessment and intervention, formulating programs for chronically ill patients, and participating in teaching seminars for medical students and interns. She also helped individuals and famllies adjust to illness and death, and she was the first mental health professional providing services to the first Palliative Care Unit in a major metropolitan hospital. She completed her thesis on grief work (entitled "Good Grief") and has incorporated that into a central part of her clinical work. Dr. Keenan also worked in community clinics with the underserved and disadvantaged, new immigrants and indigents. She helped these patients assimilate into their new homes and country, and access much needed resources.
During her first professional position at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Dr. Keenan became the Hospital's representative for their Child Protective Services, often working extended hours investigating cases of child abuse, neglect and maltreatment. Her last job in Canada was as a school social work supervisor, in charge of a team of school social workers responsible for helping students who manifested behavioral, academic, family and social problems. In addition to a masters degree from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and a doctorate from the State University at Albany, New York, Dr. Keenan has advanced training in individual, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and in couple and family therapy.
The current focus of Dr. Keenan's work in private practice involves working with individuals, couples and families, and doing court-appointed psychosocial assessments. She also has considerable experience in forensic work as an expert witness in wrongful death suits, and court testimony for child custody cases, Dr. Keenan is bilingual and speaks English and French fluently.
